ALLEN Garb, owner of The Good Guys in Dandenong, is this year’s recipient of the retail award and said it was an honour.
Mr Garb purchased the store three years ago after spending 15 years in the corporate retail world with Wesfarmers and then a couple of years owning a retail store in Perth. Since he took over the Good Guys store, the turnover has almost doubled and employee numbers have reached almost 50.
He also says that staff knowledge of merchandise is a key element to the stores success which he admits is difficult at a time when the customers are very informed on different products.
The first thing visitors to the store will notice since Allen’s takeover is the new layout. The ability to see all of the products from every vantage point in the store together with designated signage has meant a totally new feel.
He said the business’ success and award nomination was due to his staff. The members have proven to be community focused by joining United Way – an organisation that manages community projects – and every purchase at the store contributed to the community, such as $20,000 going to the Dandenong Hospital for its Child Play Centre.
Mr Garb said the award justified the efforts his staff in the community.
