Pleas on trees

By Bridget Cook
GREATER Dandenong Mayor Roz Blades has called for community help, after a number of trees were destroyed by vandals.
The most recent incident, involving an axe, led to two trees being destroyed in Racecourse Street in Springvale.
Last financial year the council invested $504,000 to plant new trees and maintain existing plantings.
Cr Blades said environmental vandalism would not be tolerated.
“Council invests a significant amount of money into improving the environmental amenity of the city,” she said.
“Vandalism such as this achieves very little, aside from putting a major dent in community pride.
“I am appalled by this senseless act.”
Cr Blades urged the community to report any incidents of tree vandalism to the council or Victoria Police.
“This is a community problem and we seek community support,” she said.
“We take great pride in our city and so do our residents. Together we need to make a strong stand and show that this kind of vandalism is unacceptable.”
