Roller derby hitting

SOUTH Sea Roller Derby (SSRD) has reached the final home bout of 2011, and everything is at stake for the Cutthroat Charmers and the Dolly Rogers.
“Somewhere Over the Painbow” will see Dolly’s captains Pacmanda and Dani Darko lead their red warriors into the fray against the Harmin’ Miranda, Sailor Mouth Sadie and those lavender ladies of the Cutthroat Charmers.
Crowd favourites Em C Hammer, The Flyin’ Nun Chucker, Mollycious Intent and Ethel Noll will all be raring to claim victory for their teams – and with the league ever-growing, look out for new faces Mel Adjusted and Terror to Pieces.
Roller derby is Australia’s fastest-growing women’s sport, and it doesn’t take much to see why.
The full-contact game offers high-speed action, tactical play, and fun and friendship with some of the fiercest females you’ll ever meet.
Since its birth in 2009, the Frankston/Dandenong-based SSRD league has grown to more than 100 members, recruited from the length and breadth of Melbourne’s south-east, and beyond.
Thousands more fans have packed into Springers Leisure Centre to witness the regular carnage.
But fear not – the violence stays on the rink, and between bouts the battle-weary beauties are real life nurses, social workers, consultants, make-up artists, mums and even a grandmother.
So follow these fearless females, along the yellow brick road of bumps, bruises and a bloody good fight.
SSRD’s final bout of 2011 will be held at Springers Leisure Centre, 400 Cheltenham Road, Keysborough, on Saturday 5 November. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7.30pm start.
All ages are welcome and alcohol is available for those over 18. Tickets cost $10 per person and $5 for children. Under-5s get in free. A portion of ticket sales will be donated to the Black Dog Institute.
