BOTTLE shops battling for customers are leading to increased violent behaviour in Dandenong, City of Greater Dandenong councillor Sean O’Reilly fears.
At the council’s 12 March meeting he asked for a report on the impact of the “high number” of packaged liquor outlets in central Dandenong.
He said there were more than 30 alcohol supply outlets in the CBD.
“Having too many outlets might mean more promotion of alcohol at cheaper prices,” he said.
“Competition is good for responsible consumers, but I have concern that cheaper and easier access to alcohol may have a negative impact on our youth and disadvantaged.
“Having a lot of outlets also makes it more difficult for police to control negative aspects associated with excessive drinking.”
He said fewer alcohol outlets would see less discounting and promotional activity and could mitigate alcohol-related violence.
Community services director Mark Doubleday said the council had commissioned research into this area and the results would influence an Alcohol Management Policy.
“There is a specific process underway,” he said.
Mr Doubleday said Victoria Police had indicated that alcohol was often implicated in serious assaults and family violence but it was yet to be determined whether a reduction in one could lead to a reduction in the other.
