OBITUARY

Hilda Lilian Peachey

August 29, 1906-March 2, 2012

FRIENDLY, warm-hearted, generous and caring – these are just some of the words often used to describe Hilda Peachey, who has died at the grand age of 105.

A Dandenong resident and talented dressmaker, she was known for helping many of her neighbours with her cooking, sewing and English skills.

She did volunteer work at the Brotherhood of St Laurence shop in Dandenong for 25 years.

Mrs Peachey was born in Port Melbourne, one of eight children of Charles and Elizabeth Leeson.

She met her future husband Stan Peachey in Glenroy in the 1920s and they made their home in Boronia, where Mr Peachey conducted a milk round.

During the Great Depression, the couple moved to Pascoe Vale and later to a market garden in Keysborough.

Tragedy struck early 1959 when Mr Peachey was killed outside Ordish Firebrick Company’s factory in Stud Road, Dandenong, when riding his bicycle to work.

Mrs Peachey moved to Alexander Avenue in 1973 where she lived until 2010. She still attended church until five years before her death and was still cooking until only three years ago. She moved into the Hallam Aged Care Centre when she required full-time care.

Mrs Peachey is survived by her daughter Coral, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
