Dandenong's Streetlighters youth group keeps busy

By MARG STORK

THE energetic Streetlighters youth group is justly proud of its members’ latest achievement — a fund-raising walkathon.

The group, which is associated with the Cornerstone drop-in centre in Dandenong, netted money through the walkathon to allocate towards visiting slums in the Philippines.

Praising the young walkers, Pastor Don Cameron, who is the co-ordinator at Cornerstone, said the Streetlighters soccer and basketball teams continued to do well and the Commonwealth Bank was about to present members with a substantial donation to continue their work.

Not only do the Streetlighters have many generous supporters in their welfare work but Cornerstone, since its inception has had many loyal supporters — both individuals and community organisations.

One of the most generous and loyal organisations whose members make ongoing donations is the Rotary Club of Dandenong East. The Rotarians made yet another donation to Cornerstone in September.

Cornerstone operates out of buildings formerly occupied by Dandenong Church of Christ in Mason Street.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to Cornerstone can send cheques or money orders to Pastor Don Cameron, PO Box 358, Dandenong 3175.

Fund-raising dinner

Wellsprings for Women has issued invitations to its annual fund-raising dinner.

It’s all for a brilliant cause, as funds raised will help the service continue helping newcomers to Greater Dandenong through the diverse programs offered to women.

The dinner will be held from 7pm on November 23 at Frecca Azzura, 784-796 Springvale Road, Keysborough, and tickets are $50 per person. This includes beer, wine, and soft drinks.

Payment is required by November 5 and bookings can be made by calling 9701 3740 or administration@wellspringsforwomen.com.

Children’s expo at Springer’s

Just one of the many springtime events coming up for families in Greater Dandenong is a children’s expo and fun day at Springer’s Leisure Centre in Keysborough.

The event, on October 25 from 10am-1pm, will provide a bright, free entertainment program of children’s activities while their parents can meet other parents and also learn about the health and well-being of their loved ones.

This includes discussions on the benefits of the children attending a playgroup, childhood development and community connection, as well as the importance of enrolling children for kindergarten and school, and how to link with local service providers who work with children and families.
