The AFL and AFL Victoria have launched a new service to help injured local footballers get quick access to medical services.
Sports Medicall is a new service in which footballers who hurt themselves while playing can book appointments with leading specialists and forgo long waiting times.
Sports Medicall is a phone booking service which gives players appointments with sports medicine physicians and associated services for the equivalent fee of a standard consultation.
Epworth Sports Medicine Exercise Group, Lifecare Sports Medicine in Prahran and Croydon, Dr Karen Holzer and Imaging at Olympic Park are the first groups associated with the service, which will open on April 8.
The AFL has also started a medical fellowship program to bring more young doctors into AFL football in anticipation that several older team doctors will retire in coming seasons.
The fellowship will involve the AFL taking on young doctors for a two-year program in which they will work with AFL club doctors and with state league teams.
