Tet brings celebrations

ONE OF the largest Victorian celebrations of the Lunar New Year came to Sandown Racecourse last weekend as more than 30,000 people attended the 2006 Tet Festival.
Celebrating the Year of the Dog according to lunar horoscopes, the Tet Festival is largely the Vietnamese community’s Lunar New Year celebration.
A host of dignitaries attended the festival including Dandenong MP and Multicultural Affairs minister John Pandazopoulos, Lyndhurst MP Tim Holding and City of Greater Dandenong mayor Peter Brown.
Meanwhile, local National Australia Bank (NAB) branch members who could speak Vietnamese helped festival goers open new bank accounts.
NAB regional executive for retail banking Nesan Naidoo presented two awards to students from the local Vietnamese community who performed well in their Victorian Certificate of Education.
Both Hong Nguyen and Michell Nguyen scored ENTERs of 99.9 and above.
