AN impressive 39-point victory to the Dandenong Demons over third-placed North Kew Bears won’t help the hot-and-cold division-three team make the finals.
Only a handful of points separated the Demons and Bears for most of the day.
The Bears led by two points at the first break, the Demons by three at half-time, before the Bears clawed back to a one-point lead at the final change.
Breaking the trend by kicking six goals to none in the final quarter, the Demons had 11 scoring shots and held the Bears to just one in the last quarter.
A 40-point turnaround highlighted the patchy form of the Demons’ side that has the potential to challenge the ladder leaders, local rival Doveton Eagles.
Westin, Murphy and Howell kicked two each for the Demons and Harrison returned to his best with a stellar performance.
With star forward Sean Payne out of the side, there is still room for improvement in the Demons’ line-up.
Unfortunately for the Demons, the fourth-and-fifth-placed teams play each other in the final round, closing the door on any chance of the Demons breaking into the top four.
The Demons play the Parkmore Pirates this Saturday.
The Pirates were belted at Mount Waverley by 200 points last week.
For the Pirates, round 18 signals the end of a disastrous season.
Looking to rebuild and recruit over the summer, the Pirates have done well just to stick together this season.
The Southern Football League will closely review the Pirate’s operations over the summer and will work hand in hand to improve their circumstances.
Facing another 200-plus point belting at the hands of the Demons this Saturday, things can only get better for the Pirates next season.
