CHILDREN will be given a healthy kickstart to life in Greater Dandenong following the launch of a joint initiative between Mission Australia and the City of Greater Dandenong.
The Family Fun Day held last Thursday, 27 April helped celebrate the Communities for Children partnership that will see a range of activities including parental classes and fun activities for children held across the city for the remainder of the year.
City of Greater Dandenong mayor Peter Brown said the initiative was funded by a $3 million Federal Government grant.
“The amount of children in the area is predicted to increase over the next few decades so we are very excited to have such a wonderful project to enhance our services,” he said.
Mission Australia representative Helen Ansems said last week’s Family Fun Day was the first of many activities planned under the project.
“Many of these families have fled war-torn countries to start anew in Australia and it is important that they be welcomed and have a sense of belonging in their new home,” she said.
“This initiative is about giving children up to the age of five the very best chance to make a successful start in life and often that can simply begin by helping families feel part of a caring and inclusive community.”
The Family Fun Day was held at the Maternal and Child Health Centre in Dandenong South.
