NOBLE PARK RSL has launched an initiative to combat loneliness and social isolation among middle-aged residents.
The club last week started its day club, titled the Gum Club, with more than 60 people attending.
Noble Park RSL welfare coordinator Alf Goldburg said a team of 12 volunteers, including the sub-branch’s president Gordon Murray, had worked tirelessly to organise a program full of social activities.
Every Tuesday morning Gum Club participants attend the RSL and for $2 and the optional meal for $5, can meet new faces and enjoy group activities and games such as cards and exercise.
The money goes directly to raising funds for bigger activities, Mr Goldburg said.
“They put it into the pool and as we get enough money it will help with the cost for buses and trips,” he said.
Mr Goldburg said people could join the Gum Club without having to be an RSL member.
The group derived its name from the native red gum trees found in Noble Park.
For more information or to join the Gum Club, contact the Noble Park RSL on 9548 3750.
