THE Parkmore Pirates have flexed their muscles and destroyed second-placed North Kew by 44 points in their match-of-the-round Division Three SFL contest.
After a humbling 10-point loss to the struggling Skye Football Club, the Pirates – helped by the return of gun forwards Danny Casset and Kevin McLean – made a mockery of talk of North Kew as challengers to the title.
North Kew led by eight points at quarter-time, which caused a bit of stress for the Pirates’ coaching staff, but Parkmore quickly rectified the situation in the second quarter.
“At quarter-time we told them to step up,” Parkmore assistant coach Gary Connolly said.
“With the wet conditions we had to play tight, disciplined footy. You learn that in the under 10s.
“They just got the jump at the start and it took us by surprise.”
Parkmore banged on four goals to North Kew’s one, which proved to be the opposition’s final kick through the big sticks.
The Pirates’ lead was only 11 points at the long break but they scored three goals from six scoring shots to extend the lead to 29 points at three-quarter time.
North Kew only scored three points for the term, which were also the team’s final scoring shots for the match.
Parkmore scored another two goals in the final stanza.
In the end, the Pirates kicked nine goals to one after quarter-time to embarrass their second-placed rivals.
The imposing win made a mockery of Parkmore’s loss last week, when the team was forced to play without several of its stars.
The two most important inclusions were Casset and McLean – the league’s top two goal kickers.
Casset rifled through three goals against North Kew and although McLean only put one on the board, his presence was a major boost to his side’s fortunes.
“Any time you take your two key forwards out you are going to struggle,” Connolly said.
“Last week was a bit of a wake-up call, I guess. We were winning by 100 points each week at one stage so it gave us a bit of a reality check.”
