DANDENONG’S State League Two men’s hockey side held on to record a narrow 4-3 victory over the Melbourne High School Old Boys team at Mills Reserve on Saturday.
In the last home and away match for the season, Dandenong had to win to secure its third position on the State League Two ladder, as only four points separated second from fourth on the table.
The results were also good for the Springvale, Noble Park (SNP) hockey club, the State League Three side edging out La Trobe 6-3 to take out the minor premiership and march into the finals with confidence soaring.
Dave Shipton from SNP said the State League finals had to be played on a water-based surface, meaning no more hockey at Mills Reserve.
“This is where it falls down. We play at Mills Reserve all season, now our players have to go and adapt to a water-based surface,” he said.
The State Netball and Hockey Centre in Parkville will host the State League finals.
Despite the change of surface, the SNP side is ready to give its opponents a real shake-up. Brunswick finished equal second with 16 wins and looks the only real side to challenge SNP.
SNP’s Metro One side beat Moorabbin 2-1 to secure the minor premiership and guarantee themselves a promotion to a higher division.
The SNP State League Four women’s side went down 2-1 in a tight battle with Sandringham.
