A SPRINGVALE wom-an is leading a worldwide nappy revolution.
Amanda McCracken, mother of two young children and founder of Mandy Mac, has invented a reusable cloth nappy that is simple to wash. It’s also good for the environment, the nappy expert says.
Ms McCracken’s quick transformation from house mum to nappy entrepreneur happened after she struggled to keep up with the demand of the ‘modern cloth’ nappies from friends and family members.
“My neighbours wanted some, then a couple of mothers from the mothers’ group wanted some,” she said.
Ms McCracken research-ed the nappy market and found by word of mouth that there was demand for a washable nappy that was easier to clean than traditional terry squares. She then developed a ‘modern cloth’ that, once cleared of solid waste, could be popped into a washing machine then hung on the clothes line to dry.
Ms McCracken has spent close to $10,000 designing, promoting and manufacturing the product.
She called upon her past contacts from the textiles industry in Hong Kong to help manufacture en masse.
“I had 1000 manufactured and they arrived just last week,” she said.
To celebrate her achievement, Ms McCracken held a launch party on Thursday 25 January at Playdays in Springvale – accompanied by a group of mothers and their children.
Ms McCracken said the reusable nappies were better for the environment because they were not thrown into landfills, and were also better for children as they were non-allergenic.
