Aboriginal culture comes alive

Bangarra Dance Theatre will return to the Drum Theatre stage with Kinship this month.

WHAT it means to be Aboriginal in the 21st century will take centre stage at Dandenong’s Drum Theatre on 21 August.
Internationally-acclaimed Bangarra Dance Theatre will perform Kinship by award-winning choreographer Stephen Page to explore and expand audience understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
The performance will begin with Brolga, inspired by Australian Aboriginal culture systems, where every person is assigned a creature totem related to their clan.
The second work will be ID, which investigates what it means to be Aboriginal today and asks important questions about identity.
Kinship contemplates through dramatic and humorous observations how human nature can see skin colour drive perceptions.
Drum Theatre director Greg Hordacre was excited to have such a creative and energetic dance company return.
“Bangarra’s dancers possess not only virtuosic technical skill but an extraordinary capability to communicate story, character and emotion with their bodies,” he said.
Drum Theatre is at the corner of Lonsdale and Walker streets.
Tickets to the 75-minute show with interval are $47.50 for adults, $37.50 for Drum members, $25 for under-25s and $42.50 for concession card holders and group bookings.
