Singing brings diverse cultures together

By MIKE TZOUNIS

CREATIVITY Australia aims to bring people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds closer through singing.
Greater Dandenong Sings members will be among than 400 voices from 40 nationalities at the With One BIG Voice concert at the Melbourne Town Hall on 15 September.
It’s among 13 choirs participating in the event, which will feature songs such as I Still Call Australia Home, Do You Hear The People Sing and There’s A Place For Us, as well as an African gospel medley.
Tania de Jong, soprano and social entrepreneur, initiated the program back in 2008 with a vision to create positive social and economic outcomes for individuals, communities and organisations through singing.
“The science of singing is proven to make you happier, healthier and smarter, but the choirs offer so much more,” she said.
The choirs embrace people of all ages, from all walks of life, helping create networks and build bridges of understanding between diverse cultures.
They provide a joyful place for people to find friends and mentors, learn English, build skills and find work.
There is also help with resume-writing and job interview practice, work experience and employment opportunities and free singing and guitar lessons.
With One BIG Voice starts at 3pm. Tickets are $10 for children, $30 for adults, $20 concession and $50 for families.
All donations are tax-deductible as Creativity Australia is a not-for-profit charity organisation.
