YOUNG people in the southern suburbs believe increasing costs of HECS (Higher Education Contribution Scheme) are deterring many students from going on to university.
It was one of the main concerns put to Isaacs MP Ann Corcoran who held a student forum at her electorate office in Keysborough on Friday.
Discussions in the forum were based on the results of surveys recently sent to participating schools.
The survey canvassed the opinions of year 10 and 11 students on issues including health, the environment, immigration, republicanism, education and indigenous affairs.
Participating schools included Coomoora Secondary College in Springvale South and Chandler Secondary College in Keysborough.
“Whilst there was a mixture of opinions, certain issues drew almost unanimous agreement,” Ms Corcoran said.
“An overwhelming majority of students believe that young people aged 14 to 18 have a right to privacy concerning medical records and consultations.
“Similarly, a high number of students strongly support Australia becoming a republic with a popularly elected leader.”
Ms Corcoran said she was impressed with the energy and enthusiasm shown by the students who were involved in the forum.
“We live in a time when young people are becoming increasingly disconnected from politics.
“I hope that this process can show the young people of Isaacs how important it is to stand up and be heard.”
