Speed a hard lesson to learn

By Shaun Inguanzo
POLICE involved in an Anzac Day traffic crackdown were shocked when a learner driver sped through Noble Park at 177km/h.
Police said the driver, a 24-year-old from Noble Park, was unaccompanied and failed to display his L-plates.
He was driving through an 80km/h zone along the Princes Highway in Noble Park at 8.30am on Wednesday, 25 April.
Police immediately impounded the man’s car as required under anti-hoon legislation, and the driver will front court charged with speeding dangerously, exceeding the speed limit, failure to display L-plates, failure to be accompanied by a qualified driver and failure to accompany police for a breath test.
Police – clearly shocked by the move – were even more astounded 10 minutes later when they busted an already-disqualified driver for travelling at 144km/h through an 80km/h section of Heatherton Road, Dandenong North.
The 24-year-old man was charged with failure to accompany police for a breath test, driving while disqualified, and speeding.
Police immediately impounded his car.
Region 5 Regional Traffic Unit Senior Sergeant Ken Dunlop said it was lucky no-one had been seriously injured or killed given the excessive speed.
“Considering that it was Anzac Day it is a good thing that we intercepted these drivers so early in the morning before parades and other local events started to take place and people began heading out on the roads,” Sen Sgt Dunlop said.
“These results should be a warning to motorists that they will be caught should they choose to speed and drive irresponsibly.
“Once motorists are apprehended not only will they be charged but we will not hesitate to also impound their vehicles if warranted.”
