KILLESTER College students took a look at the world from behind the wire last week to campaign for the rights of asylum seekers.
Students and teachers stepped into a mock detention centre to play the roles of detainees, immigration officials, journalists and protestors.
Student protestors distributed Amnesty International’s latest campaign materials to the lunchtime crowd, including postcards addressed to Prime Minister John Howard calling for an end to indefinite detention.
Volunteer students also remained silent for part of the morning to raise money for the ongoing efforts of the Brigidine Sisters’ Asylum Seekers Project.
Teacher Jonathan Rollason said the students used stories based on real detainees’ experiences as motivation for their campaign for a more humane mandatory detention policy.
