Quilting a creative patch

By CASEY NEILL

EVERY Tuesday there’s an air of excitement and enthusiasm at Dandenong Neighbourhood House – the quilters from Wallara have arrived.
When the group from the Dandenong disability support service first started, its members were quiet and reserved. A year down the track they bound through the door and greet everyone with gusto.
“We have seen this group grow and develop in their skill level,” house manager Robyn Coslovich said.
“Many had not done much sewing until starting in this group, now they have developed skills that have surprised everyone.”
In the first term they learnt the basics of using a sewing machine and sewing in a straight line.
In term two they created a handbags from old jeans bought at the op shop, then in term three worked as a well-oiled team to create a wall hanging they presented to Wallara’s Life Options section for display.
“This was a team effort and they were all very proud of the finished article,” Ms Coslovich said.
In the final term they each created a block to form a quilt for the children’s ward at Dandenong Hospital, and made blankets for premature babies.
“Everyone developed some excellent skills and they have now started working on their own quilts,” quilting trainer Maria Cima.
“There have been some great designs and there are some very creative people.
“We are very lucky to have our volunteer Jan Davis each week who helps out in each of the sessions.”
Springvale Spotlight donated rolls of materials for the projects.
“Quilting is not a cheap activity and as learners develop their skills they are looking to do more quilts, however they are going to need to find ways of getting material for the quilts,” Ms Coslovich said.
“Many of these learners are on limited finances and any assistance with donations of materials, wadding or backing materials would be much appreciated.”
Drop donations at Dandenong Neighbourhood House, 34 King Street, Dandenong, or call 9792 5298.
