THE HEATHERTON Road flyover and Eastlink project were sites of interest for a busload of school students considering a civil construction career.
Last month the South East Local Learning and Employment Network’s (SELLEN) Local Community Partnerships division took 25 year 10 students from Eumemmerring Secondary College’s Fountain Gate campus on a tour of construction sites in the south-east.
The day began with a site in Officer, where students had their first taste of the civil construction industry by watching workers drill a hole in the ground for underground cabling to pass through.
The students then travelled to the Brandon Business Park Centre in Glen Waverley where they visited the headquarters of the Southern and Eastern Integrated Transport Authority.
They watched DVD movies of the civil construction that is taking place within the East Link project whilst being briefed by Faye Doherty, the Careers Advisor of the Civil Contractors Federation.
Ms Doherty told the students about the range of job opportunities, qualifications required, pathways and wages that are available within the industry.
Students then visited the East Link sites on Police Road and Heatherton Road and were able to see the construction that is currently underway.
The tour finished with a visit to the Dandenong Sports Stadium where a recent $9m redevelopment of the facility was completed.
