Police raise $7000 for Ebony

DANDENONG Police will present a cheque in excess of $7000 to cerebral palsy sufferer Ebony Denman after raising the funds by running in last weekend’s Melbourne Marathon.
About 16 officers from the Greater Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit took part in Sunday’s Melbourne Marathon to raise money that will buy a tracking and hoist system to help Ebony’s carer, grandmother Joy Denman, to lift her growing grandchild in the bathroom without injuring her own back. Police are expected to officially hand over the funds at a ceremony in the coming weeks.
This week, Joy Denman said she was overjoyed with the efforts of Dandenong’s detectives.
She went to the marathon with Ebony, who wore a t-shirt bearing a thank you message to the police for their fundraising initiative.
“They looked all exhausted afterwards,” Ms Denman said.
“Ebony knew that something exciting was going on.
“The police then had a barbecue in Dandenong afterwards and I had the chance to thank them all and tell them how grateful I was for what they did.”
Ms Denman said local news stories in the lead up to the run had touched the hearts of other respite care clients who Ebony’s carers also looked after.
“One, an older lady, crocheted a patchwork for Ebony.
“It was so touching, she filled in a card and gave it to the respite worker to give to us.
“I have never met the lady but just from articles in your paper she did that.”
