DANDENONG’S Country Fire Authority (CFA) rescue unit played a major role in freeing a man trapped in his car after a serious collision in Rowville on the weekend.
The Victoria Police Major Collision Investigation Unit is investigating the crash, which occurred just after midnight on Sunday.
Police said a 21-year-old Wantirna man was driving a red Nissan Pulsar south along Stud Road when it and a blue Kia Carnival van collided at the Wellington Road intersection.
The man was trapped in the Pulsar after it wrapped itself around a traffic light pole.
A CFA rescue crew used the jaws of life hydraulic equipment to free the man, who was then transported to Dandenong Hospital in a critical condition. His passenger, aged in his 20s and from Glen Waverley, was flown to The Alfred hospital in a life-threatening condition.
Police said the three men in the blue Kia were not injured. Detectives interviewed a 42-year-old Hampton Park man, who was released pending further inquiries.
