SET to make a racquet at the national championships will be six badminton players from the South East Badminton Association.
Half of the Victorian team for this year’s Badminton Australia Under-19 National Championships come from the Greater Dandenong-based association.
Six junior players – Teresa Chan, Alice Wu, Eddie Luk, Kunal Patil, Raymond Sing and John Taing – will head to Perth next month to vie for an Australian title.
To help the juniors fund their trip to Perth, the South East Badminton Association and the Eastern Ladies Badminton Association have sponsored the stellar six and the players were awarded their sponsorships at a presentation night on Thursday 19 June at Springers Leisure Centre.
From their younger days spent firing off serves at the centre, the six have come up through the ranks with the association and Wu has started training with the National Squad at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre while the other five are coached by South East Badminton Association head coach Hung Pham.
South East Badminton Association’s Margaret Beakley has been selected as the Victorian umpire to help officiate at the championships.
The championships run from 5-12 July.
