Hat-trick first a boost for Parkfield

IT’S been a lean start to the Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) summer for the Parkfield Cricket Club, but the Bears had every reason to celebrate on Saturday as paceman Daniel Ferguson snared a memorable hat-trick to derail Buckley Ridges’ first innings at Park Oval.
Ferguson’s hat-trick was the first in Parkfield’s 18 years in the Turf One competition.
With the Bears languishing in second-last place on the ladder, it could not have come at a better time.
Ferguson’s first scalp was in-form Buckley Ridges captain Shane D’Rozario, who was trapped in front with the score 5/74.
Then came – and went – playing coach Anthony Clarke-Bruce, departing in almost identical fashion to his skipper.
Having appealed for his previous two wickets, Ferguson made the umpire redundant with a menacing hat-trick ball that skittled tail-ender Simon Ferguson to ignite the celebrations.
And as if Ferguson’s haul of 5/57 wasn’t enough, the man of the hour was called upon to pad up as night watchman when the Bears, chasing 202, lost their first wicket moments before stumps.
Fittingly, Ferguson remained unbeaten – albeit without scoring – as the bails were lifted on a historic day’s play.
