Reagon in raptures at The Drum

Toshi Reagon is coming to the Drum Theatre later this month.Toshi Reagon is coming to the Drum Theatre later this month.

TOSHI Reagon hopes to captivate Dandenong with a catchy combination of funk, urban blues, gospel and folk when she comes to town on Wednesday 29 October at 8pm, as part of the Melbourne International Arts Festival.
Reagon’s performance at The Drum provides a rare chance to catch a festival act in the outer suburbs of Melbourne. Not only did Reagon, an acclaimed singer, blow Melburnians away with her rocking shows at the Spiegeltent last year, she also arranged the music and fronted the band for Robert Wilson and Bernice Johnson Reagon’s unforgettable musical production The Temptation of Saint Anthony which opened the 2007 Melbourne Festival.
Reagon’s style is truly her own.
Expect gorgeous melodies that morph into exultant gospel-infected anthems and high-energy performance. Reagon is passionate about creating awareness and engaging her listeners while having fun at the same time. This is evident in her thought-provoking lyrics, tenacity and extraordinary talent.
Joining Reagon on stage, and providing an uncompromising brew of artistic exuberance and exceptional musical talent, are Judith Casselberry on rhythm guitar and vocals, Robert ‘Chicken’ Bourke on drums, Fred Cash on bass and Adam Wolf on electric guitar.
Dirty chords and pulsating rhythms provide the perfect accompaniment to the strong, dusky silk of Reagon’s voice. Experience the rawness, rock, heart, soul, humour, sheer energy and pure aural electricity of Toshi Reagon and BigLovely.
In some ways, singer Toshi Reagon is a throwback to classic R & B artists, like Stevie Wonder or Prince, or old school rock group like Led Zeppelin; she can take any style, update it, and make it her own with incredible ease. Despite (or because of) her genre-bending, Reagon fits comfortably on a stage at Carnegie Hall, or in a dirty rock club. She is an artist who’s known for energetic performances and an exemplary gift for writing engaging songs that provoke listeners to think and have fun at the same time.
