HOMELESS seniors will soon have shelter after a $3 million grant for a 60-place residential facility in Dandenong.
Acting Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot announced last week that Wintringham, a housing and support service for elderly homeless people, would receive the grant to assist in construction.
The new accommodation will be known as the Eunice Seddon Aged Care Facility and will provide both high- and low-care residential aged-care services for older people who are homeless, or at risk of being homeless.
The CEO of Wintringham, Bryan Lipmann, was appreciative of the grant and said it was important that such a facility be built in Dandenong.
“The Dandenong region is in significant need of aged-care beds, especially for the elderly poor who can’t make financial contributions as they would in any normal aged-care facility,” he said.
Mr Lipmann said the facility had gone through town planning, received approval, and preliminary works had started.
“The land has been levelled and works have begun,” he said. “We hope to be finished in about 12 to 15 months,” he said. “It’s terrific that we will have these facilities available.”
Wintringram has operated for 20 years and provides aged-care and housing services to more than 800 people in Melbourne each night, including nearly 200 people in its residential facilities.
