Locals feature in cricket awards

THE awards are out for the Dandenong District Cricket Association’s 2008/09 season and local players again featured prominently.
North Dandenong’s Carman Mapatuna was a standout, winning the Turf 1 competition’s batting award with an average of 65.17 throughout the season.
In eight games Mapatuna blasted 391 runs, including a top score of 108 to take out the award.
He also featured in the Wookey Medal voting, coming third behind Will Butler (Buckley Ridges) and Leigh Booth (Hallam-Kalora Park).
Springvale captain Craig Slocombe was not far behind in fifth place.
Club-mate Daniel Breen took out the bowling award in Turf 4, collecting 22 wickets for the season at 6.41, while Adam Walravens, also from Springvale South, took the B Grade bowling award.
The other local to pick up an award was Parkfield’s Patrick Hill, who was named the best B Grade all-rounder. Mordialloc’s Travis Campbell was named Senior Cricketer of the Year, Maranatha Methodist’s Ashan Wijayakumara picked up Junior Cricketer of the Year, Hallam-Kalora Park’s Leigh Booth collected the Turf Champion award and Buckley Ridges’ Simon Fonceca won the Under-21 Champion award.
