Booze bust

POLICE detected a “disappointing” 31 people for drink driving offences in a major booze bus operation at Springvale Junction on the weekend.
Operation Cross Roads was run between Friday night and Saturday morning at the Springvale Junction where police tested 3507 drivers despite the rainy and windy weather.
This is one of several operations which have been run at this location since 2006.
Senior Sergeant Kim Pluim of the Region 5 Road Traffic Tasking Unit at Dandenong said the area was chosen because of its high traffic volume.
“We used five booze buses in the operation and had the whole area covered so a large volume of motorists could be tested,” Sen Sgt Pluim said.
“We had a strike rate of 1 in 113 and this is a disappointing figure for police as it shows people are still out there who continue to drink and drive.”
The highest reading was .143 recorded by a man who was an unlicensed driver.
He said police will continue to run these operations as part of ongoing road safety operations in this area.
