Amid the news reports of the mean streets of Dandenong, a group of young locals have worked together to raise money for those affected by the fires.
Last week a group of 41 took the two-hour bus ride to Morwell to share some happiness with primary school children in Traralgon.
They raised $1850 at a community event in March and on Wednesday last week, three months since the fires, presented the children with $900 worth of sporting equipment.
Dandenong Crime Prevention Officer Senior Constable Eddy MacDonald said it was a great story for the local community.
“It is great to see a group of young kids give back to the community,” he said.
“They came up with it themselves. “I’m so proud that they had the drive and the energy to follow it through.”
He said the students performed traditional Polynesian dances and the Maori haka for the schoolchildren. “They were so excited to have us visit and show them the traditions of Polynesia,” he said.
“And then to be able to give them the sporting equipment, it was awesome.”
