The council alongside Victoria Police has launched its PartySafe program in response to concerns raised by residents and police about anti-social behaviour at some local parties.
The council has worked with Victoria Police to produce an informative kit for young people and their families about planning parties for young people.
While parties can be a great opportunity for young people to socialise outside of school, they can turn sour due to problems including excessive alcohol consumption, gatecrashers, violence and complaints from neighbours.
Greater Dandenong Mayor Roz Blades said the PartySafe program was a great initiative.
She said community members were asked to register their party with Victoria Police and were then provided with information on the best ways to keep their function safe.
“The PartySafe program is as simple as registering your party with police,” Cr Blades said.
“Once you register you will then receive a kit full of useful information and tips including the importance of written invitations, security and your legal responsibilities. The kits also include a number of free items to assist in running a well-organised party, such as drink measures, PartySafe signs and coasters.”
The council has provided people with some quick tips to help make your party run smoother.
-Register your party with local police at least one week in advance.
-Consider using written invitations rather than text messages or Facebook messages to invite guests.
-Have a group of responsible adults on hand to monitor the party.
-Have a plan of action if something goes wrong.
-Call the police if you feel that a situation gets beyond your control.
-Let your neighbours know about the party. The number one reason police are called to parties is because of noise complaints.
