A NEW artwork has sprung up in Boyd Lane Dandenong.
Public artist Clare McCracken answered the call for public art submissions and felt the laneway could do with a facelift – or a few ducks.
The artwork, entitled Boyd’s Hall, features three over-sized plaster ducks, one of the most famous mass produced symbols of suburbia in the 1950s.
Trios of ducks were commonly hung over fireplaces as a mark of wealth.
“Dandenong is a suburban area, it’s a place where people live and the ducks are a symbol of suburbanism,” Ms McCracken said.
“The laneway is popular but relatively bland so it was about bringing warmth into the public space.”
Ms McCracken said all of her work was specific to the location and she hoped the artwork brought interest and intrigue to the plain area.
The work also interacts with the lounge and kitchen seating projects in nearby Palm Plaza.
The artwork is part of the City of Greater Dandenong Council’s placemaking and art program.
It will be in place for 12 months.
