Stars aiming for the top

By Gavin Staindl
THE talk at the start of the Division 1 season was that the Southern Stars would be back in the lower division in no time, but three wins in a row has the Stars eyeing off top spot.
The Stars have been more like a yo-yo in recent years, bouncing between Division 1 and 2, but with a 2-0 win over Pascoe Vale at Hosken Reserve on Saturday, the Stars moved to third on the ladder after four rounds.
The Stars’ form will be put to the test on Saturday when they meet the undefeated Whittlesea Zebras.
In Division 2, Heatherton United has bounced back from a devastating defeat, handing Knox City an embarrassing result of its own.
Heatherton strolled to a 4-0 home win and showed no signs of the undisciplined structure that was exposed in last week’s 6-0 loss to Casey.
Noble Park has won its first game of the season, beating Malvern City 2-1 at Kooyong Reserve while an exciting 10 minutes has given Dandenong City its third win of the season.
A goal to Dandenong’s John Carroll moments after half time gave the home side the lead but a quick reply by Morwell was backed up two minutes later when Vlado Juric scored the go-ahead goal to give Dandenong the 2-1 win.
After a bold showing against Dandenong Thunder in the Mirabella Cup, South Springvale dropped its second game in Division 2, going down to the Eastern Lions 3-1 at Gardiners Creek Reserve.
South Springvale had the early ascendancy and led 1-0 heading into the main break, but three second-half goals to the Lions tipped the scale in favour of the home team.
