A GHANIAN doctor who arrived in Australia as a migrant inspired students at Dandenong’s Chisholm Institute of TAFE last week to achieve as he had.
Dr Kwame Asumadu was guest speaker at the Dandenong campus before a large audience of African residents, employees of migrant services and students currently enrolled within the campus’ language and cultural studies department.
Graduating from the University of Western Australia, Dr Asumadu has worked for the Commonwealth in various roles including secretary to the Australia New Zealand Ministerial Council on Forestry.
He gave the audience an inspirational overview of his experience in these areas as well as insights into the employment opportunities available within the environmental industry.
Chisholm’s equity projects officer Ursula Besterda said Dr Asumadu’s speech was inspiration for the more than 100 Chisholm students who themselves face challenges in language and employment.
“He used his experiences to really motivate the students, emphasising how important professionalism in the workplace is, while looking to equip them with tools which they can use to further get in touch with their own values and improve their work ethics and career opportunities,” she said.
“We’re just so glad to see someone from a similar background of our students become so successful in Australia and in their chosen field and want to pass this on to young students who themselves may have only been in the country a short time.”
