THE Dandenong Demons have started the Southern Football League Division Three season with a win and a loss after being belted by Black Rock on the weekend.
A 92-point defeat at Greaves Reserve wrestled the Demons back to reality after their unexpected win against Cerberus in round one.
The Demons could not match Black Rock’s goal-kicking ability and managed only five goals for the game.
Robert Westin, who booted two, was Dandenong’s only multiple goal scorer.
Daniel Hoekstra kicked a goal for the Demons and was among the best players on the day.
Coach Mick Hawken said a number of factors contributed to the hefty loss.
“We were missing a number of key position players including Steve Coats and Chris Hawken,” he said.
“The boys worked really hard, but didn’t follow instructions, and that is what let us down.”
Hawken is confident his Demons can bounce back strongly against cross-town rivals Doveton Eagles on Saturday.
“It’s the big local derby and will be a great game,” he said.
“We’re taking things one week at a time.
“Hopefully we can come away with a win.”
The 2pm game will be played at Power Reserve, Doveton.
CERBERUS bounced back into winning form against the Sandown Cobras in their round two Division Three clash at Edinburgh Reserve last Saturday.
It was a seesawing contest until three-quarter time, but the Navy boys blew the Cobras out of the water and went on to win by 48 points.
Anthony Formoso and Matty Vale booted three goals each for the Cobras, and Brian Todd was the stand-out performer for the team.
There will be no relief for the Cobras this Saturday when they travel to Mount Martha to play South Mornington.
