DVD to tackle gambling

By Shaun Inguanzo
A NEW DVD will tackle problem gambling among Dandenong’s ethnic communities.
The South Eastern Region Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) this week launched its Problem Gambling DVD and information kit in three languages to target Dandenong’s ethnic communities.
Gaming Minister John Pandazopoulos helped MRC officials launch the new DVD on Tuesday and said the State Government was working to reduce the number of poker machines in Dandenong.
MRC chairman The Very Reverend Dr Michael Protopopov said problem gambling was not confined to any one ethnic group, hence the DVD’s release in several languages.
“The MRC has its finger on the pulse of the community and is therefore able to judge the need for a multicultural approach and a multilinguistic approach to the problem,” he said.
“It provides gamblers, their families and other support groups with ideas as to how to get gamblers to talk about their problem and recognise it.
“It then helps them to cooperatively work with family and friends and others to find solutions.”
The DVD and information kit will be free of charge to MRC clients with problem gambling habits.
