Pet Christmas warning

PETS may appear an irresistible present idea but Greater Dandenong’s Regulatory Services manager Peter Shelton is urging people to consider the consequences before purchasing one for under the Christmas tree.
“Pets are a wonderful gift only if you know the receiver can put in the time to look after that pet.
“Too often around this time of year, pets are given as Christmas presents only to be dumped in shelters in January,” he said.
“Local animal shelters are already overwhelmed with the number of stray cats and dogs throughout the year and I urge people to think twice before they embark on giving a pet as a present.”
Relevant considerations include whether the recipient will exercise and feed the pet daily and whether their accommodation has adequate room for a furry addition.
“While puppies and kittens are the most popular present choices, the lifestyle of the recipient may mean a pet requiring less care is more appropriate.
“Both council officers and the RSPCA can provide advice to assist in choosing the right pet,” Mr Shelton said.
For inquiries or advice, contact the RSPCA on 9224 2222 or the council on 9239 5100.
