Good job – but keep saving

REMAIN vigilant in your water saving efforts.
That’s what South East Water is telling residents in the cities of Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia this month as figures reveal that Melbourne’s south east saved almost 70 billion litres of water from 2006 to 2007.
South East Water acting chief executive Kate Vinot said it was vital that residents maintained their water saving efforts into the new year and throughout 2008.
“Melbourne has been in water restrictions for over one year and the local community has made a fantastic effort to use less water and make savings wherever possible,” Ms Vinot said.
“The use of alternative water sources such as rainwater and greywater, which are not subject to water restrictions, has been widespread and the community has sought innovative methods to keep gardens alive and local sportsgrounds functioning.
“It’s important that summer holiday makers are aware of and comply with the level of restrictions at their holiday destination.”
Melbourne is in Stage 3A water restrictions, which have been in place since April 2007.
Under Stage 3A restrictions, gardens can be watered twice a week for two hours in the morning; one in four sports grounds can be watered and efficient commercial car washes can be used.
Stage 3A water restrictions have enabled most gardens to be maintained, minimised the impact on business and ensured the continuation of sport throughout summer.
“Melbourne’s reservoirs are currently 38.6 per cent of capacity (as of 9 January), following some very good rain across the catchments in December, but we are coming off a very low base,” Ms Vinot said.
“Following water restrictions and obtaining rebates on water-efficient appliances such as dual-flush toilets and water tanks are important ways to reduce water consumption in and around the home.
“While the State Government will spend $4.9 billion in major water infrastructure projects including a desalination plant and other irrigation upgrades by the end of 2011, it is important that we continue to use water wisely.”
