Upgrade won’t stop crash family’s grief

THE husband of a 33-year-old Endeavour Hills woman killed in a four-car collision in Springvale last month says it will take more than road safety upgrades to mend his family’s wounds.
VicRoads and Victoria Police announced last week that they would investigate road safety solutions for Police Road, Springvale, in the wake of a four-car collision that killed mother-of-three Marilyn Hedrich on 20 September.
The Hedrich family last Saturday held Mrs Hedrich’s funeral at the Springvale Botanical Cemetery.
The driver of a sedan involved in the collision remains in a critical condition in The Alfred hospital.
But husband John Hedrich said that while he welcomed the road upgrades, it was too little, too late for the Endeavour Hills family.
He said self-control from drivers would be the ultimate safety measure.
VicRoads metro south east regional manager Steve Brown said the fatality had prompted an investigation into Police Road.
“Following the recent fatality on Police Road, VicRoads will work with Victoria Police to assist with an investigation and will use this information to review road safety issues in the area,” he said.
But Mr Brown would not comment on how Police Road would be upgraded.
“At this stage it would be inappropriate for VicRoads to comment further.”
The Hedrichs’ four-month-old son, Matthias, was in the same car as his mother during the collision but was saved by his baby capsule and the heroics of a 14-year-old boy who pulled him from the wreck.
The Major Collision Investigation Unit this week told the Star it was continuing its investigations and was waiting to speak with the critically ill driver.
