City’s fourstorey future

By Nathan Johnston
FOURstorey apartment buildings are set to become one of the defining characteristics of the new look Dandenong.
The City of Greater Dandenong approved an application for a fourstorey development in Hutton Street, Dandenong, on Monday night.
It will include 10 apartments across three levels including six threebedroom dwellings and four twobedroom dwellings.
Car parking for 15 vehicles will be provided on the ground level.
The council’s manager of planning and design Jody Bosman said in his report to the council that mediumdensity housing was appropriate in areas adjacent to the centre of Dandenong.
“These developments will assist in the rejuvenation of the Dandenong Principle Activity Centre.
“A development of this size will assist to redefine the character of modern Dandenong,” Mr Bosman said.
“The design is contemporary and utilises a variety of materials and colours which will enhance the streetscape that is somewhat ageing and in need of revitalisation.”
Each of the apartments will contain open planned kitchen and meals areas and living rooms, as well as combined bathroom and laundries.
All have balconies accessible from the main internal living area of each apartment.
According to Mr Bosman’s report, the Hutton Street property falls into a zone known as the Residential Periphery area.
The periphery zone, just outside central Dandenong, has been earmarked for major housing redevelopment in the next 10 years.
“Medium density residential, apartment and multiunit type developments accommodating a population of 8000 by the year 2015 is envisaged for the periphery area.”
The aim is to provide more housing closer to the centre of Dandenong to eliminate the need for cars.
“Residents of the development are able to access their shopping, entertainment, service needs and potentially employment with the Dandenong Activity Centre which provides an environment where car ownership is not essential.”
