Students start career engines

By Shaun Inguanzo
STUDENTS from throughout Melbourne’s south-east kick started their career engines last week with a tour of various automotive businesses.
South East Local Learning and Employment Network’s Local Community Partnership (LCP) organised the automotive career adventure tours around Greater Dandenong.
The tours, on Wednesday, 20 June, and Friday, 22 June, showed students a range of automotive careers.
LCP community partnerships coordinator Alex Palazzolo said a total of 22 students from schools across the cities of Casey, Greater Dandenong and Cardinia participated in the tours, including three girls.
“The adventure days are designed to promote the range of jobs available within a particular industry,” he said.
“They’re also an opportunity for students to hear about the various experiences of people in a specific field.”
Mr Palazzolo said the students were surprised by the number of career streams available.
“They saw gas conversion, panel beating, spray painting, auto electrical, suspension and mechanical specialists,” he said.
The day achieved its goal, Mr Palazzolo said, allowing students an inside look into the workforce that will one day earn them a living.
“The feedback from the kids was positive,” he said.
“We asked students beforehand what specific areas they were interested in.
“At the end of the day we asked them if they had thoughts of changing their minds after visiting the various work sites.
“But the feedback was that it had confirmed that these were areas the students wanted to get involved in.”
The next automotive career adventure will take place on 8 August. To book, call Mr Palazzolo on 9706 8711.
