Southern vets never pushed

THE interclub challenge between the Southern Veterans Cycling Club and their eastern suburbs counterparts brought the Southern side a comfortable 47-19 victory.
The friendly rivalry between the two largest clubs in the Victorian Veterans Cycling Council started in 1998.
There were 197 riders racing to win the shield and southern rider Jeff Stobie scored a win in the A-grade event.
Greg Pauls (Southern) won the B-grade event while C-grade honours went to Milos Pucar (Southern).
The F-grade race proved the most exciting of the day, with Southern cyclists Rob Melesecca and Pat Ruys fighting out a close finish.
The pair managed to pass an Eastern rider in the concluding stages of the race and Melesecca powered home to beat Ruys by a tyre.
The Eastern side has won the shield a total of 10 times, but is being quickly caught by the ever-improving Southern side, which has now secured victory seven times.
