‘Green’ energy plans approved

By Rebecca Fraser
GREATER Dandenong Council has approved plans for a power plant in Dandenong South that will turn green waste into electricity.
At Monday night’s council meeting the planning application for the facility, to be built on Ordish Road, was approved.
Cleeland Ward councillor Paul Donovan said the initiative would have a dual benefit for Dandenong.
“There is a real crisis in Australia with the availability of landfill and this will provide a good alternative to household and green waste going straight into landfill,” he said.
“This will also help transform waste into renewable energy.”
The South Eastern Regional Waste Management Group supported the application and said the facility would provide renewable energy to nearby industries through the waste heat generated by the facility.
The facility will operate every day of the year.
Air emission and air quality levels are expected to be reduced to a level below current Environment Protection Authority standards when the plant becomes operational.
Chemical recycling company Wilsolve, located next to the Ordish Road site, said it had already identified an opportunity to use the plant’s lowpressure waste steam to replace natural gas used to operate its boiler.
