Warning siren

By Shaun Inguanzo
PLANS for a new ambulance depot in Noble Park could be blocked by Greater Dandenong Council after residents objected to the development.
The Metropolitan Ambulance Service (MAS) has applied to council for a permit to construct a depot at the corner of the Princes Highway and Himbeck Court in Noble Park.
But Himbeck Court residents are up in arms over the depot’s location, and the fact that ambulances would enter and exit the depot via the court – not the highway.
Noble Park North Ward councillor Maria Sampey said she sympathised with the residents because the ambulance traffic may pose a safety threat to residents driving or walking through the court.
Cr Sampey said residents had contacted her also concerned that the ambulances may use their lights and sirens during early hours of the morning while exiting the depot to attend emergencies.
“The residents are kicking up a stink, and I’m supporting the residents,” Cr Sampey said.
“The way the ambos have structured (the depot) is so that the entrance is in Himbeck Court.
“I believe that poses a safety issue for residents and their children in the court.”
She said that the MAS should instead look at building the depot further east along the Princes Highway towards Fintonia Road, where it would be next to a trucking company.
Star contacted the MAS for comment but did not receive a response before deadline.
The permit will be voted on by councillors at Monday night’s council meeting in Springvale, at 7pm.
