KEYSBOROUGH celebrated Mother’s Day by handing Tooradin the ‘mother’ of all thrashings at the Rowley Allen Reserve on Saturday.
The Seagulls were kept to only one goal for the match, kicked in the third term by defender Jason Boocock, while Keysborough forwards had a field day booting 28 majors to triumph by 166 points and move to the top of the Casey Cardinia league ladder.
Prolific spearhead Luke McGuinness snared 11 goals in a dominant game at full forward while Matthew Freeman, Tyson King and Clinton King added three goals each to the tally.
There was little joy for the struggling Seagulls who were outclassed in all aspects of the game and trailed by 45, 86 and 134 points at each change of end.
To add to the visitors’ woes goalsneak Aaron Setford left the field with an injury early in the day, leaving the Seagulls attack impotent against the run of Michael Downie, Corey Wilkinson and Shaun Daly.
After Tyson King was manned up in the second half, McGuinness took control and put on a goal-kicking show with little resistance.
Burra coach Greg Siwes was pleased with the form of his players and said they had earned their place at the head of the table.
“Look (Tooradin) was not in our class in the end, but we were good and I thought we played a good brand of footy,” he said.
“We were aiming for 30 goals after we had kicked eight and eight in the first two quarters but we didn’t quite reach that mark.
“You never complain when you’re on top of the ladder-everyone wants to be there whether they admit it or not. We haven’t been up there for a long time so, yeah, why not enjoy it. They can come and knock us off now if they are good enough.”
Rohan and Aaron Hyde battled it out for Tooradin along with Steve Arvanitis and Adam Galea, but there were few positives on the bleak afternoon for coach Cristian O’Brien.
In other round five games, Narre Warren defeated Beaconsfield by 64 points, Hampton Park downed ROC by 19, Pakenham overcame Berwick by 34 points and Cranbourne beat Doveton by 31 points in the season’s biggest upset to date.
