Butterfly opera is all of a flutter

DANDENONG’S Drum Theatre will be hosting the premiere of Oz Opera’s national tour of Madame Butterfly, one of the worlds most loved operas, on Saturday 5 July at 8pm.
Showcasing a cast of Australia’s finest emerging opera stars, Madame Butterfly will be touring for 13 weeks, travelling to 29 local communities across Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia.
Directed by one of Australia’s most renowned artists John Bell, Madame Butterfly is set in Nagasaki in 1946 and uses traditional Japanese design and modern Western influences of the time.
Madame Butterfly is sung in English and tells the tragic love story of the American Lieutenant Pinkerton and his beautiful young geisha wife.
Miss Saigon is the modernised version of Madame Butterfly.
The show is accompanied by a chamber orchestra of 11 musicians, conducted by Simon Kenway and Chris Van Tuinen, and performed by a cast of 11 opera singers.
In 2009, Oz Opera will complete its national tour of Madame Butterfly with performances in Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia.
