STUDENTS from Casey Grammar School became green thumbs as part of a program that gave them a taste of a career in landscape gardening.
The Dandenong-based South East Local Learning and Employment Network’s Local Community Partnership (SELLEN LCP) division organised the Landscaping Your Future program for 15 students in years five to 10 at the college.
The program involved the SELLEN LCP facilitating a partnership between Bunnings Cranbourne and Casey Grammar School that saw students work on a landscape gardening project within the school grounds.
The term two program involved two staff members from Bunnings attending to assist students each Friday between 11.30am and 1pm over seven weeks.
According to SELLEN LCP coordinator Alex Palazzolo, Bunnings staff mentored the students and assisted them with manual labour.
“Bunnings also provided materials for the project which included a lawn mower, whipper snipper, hedge trimmer, wheel barrow, shovels, rakes and other items,” he said.
The students were also able to tour the Bunnings warehouse where they were able to order and check stock, and shop around to fit their budget.
The program concluded with a barbecue lunch and the City of Casey deputy mayor Colin Butler presenting certificates to the students.
