THE Sandown Cobras Football Club is kicking goals for cancer research as the City of Greater Dandenong’s first footy club to support the Call to Arms fundraiser.
Call to Arms is a Cancer Council Victoria initiative made recognisable by the yellow arm bands that footballers wear on the nominated day.
Sandown Cobras club president Lew Short said the club supported Call to Arms because he, and many at the club, had been affected by cancer in their families.
Mr Short said he hoped the fundraiser on 2 August would raise awareness of men’s cancer risks, namely of the prostate, and raise funds for cancer research via a luncheon to be held at Edinburgh Reserve.
“My father died with cancer, which is my personal experience with it, but at the end of the day we have also had people here who have had problems with their prostates,” Mr Short said.
“No one has died but they’ve suffered prostate cancer and had to have operations.”
Mr Short said the club would host a luncheon between 12.30pm and 2pm on Saturday 2 August at Edinburgh Reserve, where it will play a game of football following the fundraiser.
The players will wear yellow armbands on the field to further raise awareness.
Anyone who wishes to attend the $25-per-head fundraiser should contact Mr Short on 0438 534 719.
