EastLink opens to speeders

POLICE have booked more than 140 people on EastLink in the first week and a half of operation.
They included 31 speeding drivers with 29 drivers caught breaking the limit by up to 25 kph.
Three cars were impounded under hoon legislation and one driver was caught travelling at 170kph with a blood alcohol reading of 0.081.
Operation Eastlinker has been running since the tollway’s opening on 29 June and Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Ken Lay said he was disappointed by the number of speeding motorists.
“Given the fact that Victoria Police made it well known that a 24 hour operation would be in effect on EastLink, it is disgraceful that so many motorists were caught travelling over the speed limit,” said Mr Lay.
“Speeding is a well-known contributor to many fatal and serious injury collisions, and we were disappointed to see that motorists ignored our warnings by deliberately putting themselves and other drivers in danger by exceeding the speed limit.
“Motorists are reminded that speeding is not acceptable and anyone who chooses to exceed the speed limit will be caught and penalised.”
