Exhibition gets into gear with tutus, corsets

By Kelly Yates
AN EXHIBITION dedicated to tutus, corsets and theatrical costumes officially opened this week at Dandenong’s Drum Theatre.
Creator Adrian Clarke has designed and produced the costumes showcased in the free exhibition, on display until 10 August.
The Keysborough designer said this was the second exhibition he had showcased at the Drum Theatre.
Mr Clarke has been creating costumes for more than 29 years.
He began his career making costumes for the Australian Ballet then spent two years designing clothing in the United States.
On his return to Australia, Mr Clarke worked independently designing and creating costumes for various theatre groups.
The designer now spends his days as a costume historian, researching and writing briefs for films such as Ned Kelly.
Mr Clarke is following the family tradition of fashion.
“My grand mother and great grandmother were involved in the clothing industry. But I am the first male to continue the trend,” he said.
Mr Clarke will also be running a workshop on 4 August based on the art of the tutu.
The hands-on workshop will teach the basic construction of a classic ballet tutu and participants will also get the opportunity to make their own tutus.
